This sign went up using the lingo of IN-N-OUT, protein style, animal, style, double double, could it be true that IN-N-OUT is coming to Shanghai?
With IN-N-OUT not even in the East Coast of the US the rumor was hard to believe they are coming to China. It is a fake, a copy IN-N-OUT! IN-N-OUT caught wind and tried to make the madness stop. Come to find out IN-N-OUT doesn’t have trademarks in any place other than the US. CaliBurger as the new burger joint is called allegedly settled out of court with IN-N-OUT and in the settlement agreed to make some slight adjustments to their resemblance to the West coast favorite.
It is now open and of course we had to go check it out.
The restaurant is beige, very beige instead of the IN-N-OUT red. I think things may have been red and painted beige with the settlement agreement, that is my theory for it is being so beige. They even sell merchandise. Limited offerings a shirt and hat but the display case on the wall, similar. The menu like IN-N-OUT is very simple, burgers, shakes and fries. With the exception of you can get a spiked milk shake with a shot of bourbon! They also sell beer and wine. Oh and have CaliBurger girls… they weren’t there at our visit probably out around the city promoting the place.
They have combo meals or set meals as called here you can get a cheeseburger, fries and soda for 40RMB ($7). It comes in a paper box, the fries in a tray, and the burger wrapped in a paper sleeve. Look familiar?
It was pretty good! When you want a little comfort food from home, a treat, it is nice to know it is there. I will take an “inspired by” In-N-Out versus none. Not too hard to get to we took the metro to Jing’An temple and it is a 10-15 min walk from there.
