Cheeky Beijing Taxi Drivers

Getting a taxi to take you places in Beijing was not a problem, however getting back, another story. We have gotten into a few taxis where the driver for whatever reason didn’t want to take us so we had to get out and find one that would take us.

We also experienced price gouging. To get to the Forbidden City is cost 20RMB from the hotel. To get back to the hotel, the taxi drivers wanted to charge 80RMB, with the meter off of course. We experienced this going to dinner as well, to the restaurant from the hotel, no problem, getting back… the price was so much more.  I don’t think I approve of their business practices.  I refused to pay and found another taxi who would run the meter.

Good for you Rebecca. You can let those hacks push you around. Use to be like that in parts of Shanghai but its been cleaned up quite a bit with the onset of the Expo. I suspect when that scales back some of them will go back to thier old ways. Keep your guard up.
